Cee Lo Green Angers John Lennon Fans With 'Imagine' Lyrics

Green changed a key line in Lennon's song during his New Year's Eve performance.

How did you spend your New Year's Eve? Well, if you were Cee Lo Green, you began by royally ticking off John Lennon fans, then briefly apologizing for your transgressions before finally agreeing to disagree.

Yes, Green caught some heat after changing a key line to Lennon's 1971 classic "Imagine" during his performance on NBC's New Year's Eve telecast — he turned the pointed "And no religion too" into the far more, uh, inclusive "And all religion's true" — a move that drew criticism from longtime Lennon fans. In a flurry of tweets, they chastised him for everything from messing with the song's true message to causing the late musician to roll over in his grave, a response that had Green on the defensive.

After his performance, he took to his Twitter account to apologize, writing, "Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys ... I was trying to say a world where u could believe what u wanted, that's all." Of course, soon after, Green apparently had a change of heart, deleting his mea culpa (and all related tweets), and replacing them with a simple "Happy New Year Everyone!"

In a follow-up tweet, he took a subtle jab at his detractors, writing that he was currently listening to "We Just Disagree" by Dave Mason, though, in response to a fan's question, he said that his playlist choice had nothing to do with the "Imagine" flap and everything to do with "indifference in general." Of course, Lennon fans will probably be happy to know that, according to Green's latest tweet, he's also been listening to "I'm Only Sleeping," a Beatles track from their seminal Revolver album.

A spokesperson for Green could not be reached for comment on the matter by press time.

Three arrested for peddling miracle stem cell cure (Reuters)

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) ? Three men were arrested and a fourth is being sought by the FBI in what investigators said was a scheme to market stem cells as miracle cures to desperate people suffering from terminal diseases.

The arrests began in the past 10 days after two indictments were issued in November charging the four with 39 counts of mail fraud and unlawfully manufacturing, distributing and selling stem cells and stem cell procedures not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The FBI said the men received more than $1.5 million from patients suffering from incurable diseases.

One of the four men charged, Vincent Dammai, 40, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, was identified as a researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina. The FBI said he used university facilities to create stem cells without obtaining permission from the FDA or university officials.

Francisco Morales, 52, of Brownsville, Texas, is charged with falsely saying that he was a medical doctor who operated a clinic in Brownsville that specialized in using stem cells to treat incurable diseases.

Also charged is Alberto Ramon, 48, of Del Rio Texas, a licensed midwife who prosecutors said obtained umbilical cord blood to create stem cells from his patients at a maternity-care clinic.

A fourth man, Lawrence Stowe, 58, of Dallas remains at large and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The indictment charges that Stowe, who sometimes referred to himself as "Dr. Larry Stowe" "marketed, promoted, and sold stem cells" for the treatment of several diseases through front companies.

The CBS News program "Sixty Minutes" profiled Stowe in 2010, interviewing an ALS patient who said Stowe told him his stem cell therapy could reverse and cure the debilitating and often fatal disease. There is no cure for ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease and there is no treatment that can reverse the symptoms. Most patients die from the disease within five years, according to the ALS Association.

"The investigation identified a scheme whereby the suffering and hopes of victims in extreme medical needs were used and manipulated for personal profit," Cory Nelson, special agent in charge of the FBI's San Antonio office said on Friday.

Nelson says Morales would meet people in the United States to sell them the procedures, then travel to Mexico to perform them.

Dr. Craig Klugman, a medical ethicist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, said stem cells appeal to people who are desperate for cures.

"They are using a new marketing tool to make you think this is something very futuristic and cutting edge," Klugman said. "I would be very skeptical of anything claiming to have stem cells in it because, at least in the United States, there is nothing commercially approved for use with stem cells in it."

He said products are being marketed as wrinkle creams or wrinkle removers that contain stem cells for the same reason.

"As a result of this fraudulent scheme, the public was mislead into believing that stem cells and other drug and biological products sold by the defendants had been approved by the FDA to treat cancer, ALS, MS, and Parkinson's disease," Nelson said.

A man has died from bird flu in Southern China, it has emerged.

It is the first case of the virus in more than 18 months.

Positive tests on a dead market chicken last week prompted nearby Hong Kong's government to issue an alert.

The island's authorities culled 17,000 chickens after three birds were confirmed to have died from the H5N1 bird flu strain.

It is still not yet clear whether the chickens came from a local farm or if they were imported.

Iraqi leader calls for unity, political stability (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraq's prime minister called Sunday for unity and greater political stability to ensure the country's security after the end of the American military presence.

Speaking at a a televised celebration in Baghdad, Nouri al-Maliki warned Iraqis against "excessive joy" over the departure of American troops, saying the country's security situation remains perilous. The last U.S. combat soldiers exited on Dec. 18.

Al-Maliki called on all Iraqis to unite in the interest of the nation and stressed that Iraq needs stability if it hopes to remain secure and rebuild.

"We need political stability so we can address the world in one voice and not in ... conflicting voices," al-Maliki said.

Al-Maliki's comments came during a political crisis that started after his government issued an arrest warrant for Iraq's top Sunni politician, re-igniting fears that sectarian tensions could divide the country and even re-ignite a civil war between Sunnis and Shiites.

Al-Maliki is also trying to get rid of his deputy prime minister, another Sunni, leaving many Sunnis worried that they are being sidelined from power.

On Sunday evening, a Katyusha rocket exploded in Abu Dshir, a Shiite enclave in the mainly Sunni neighborhood of Dora in the southwest of Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding four others, according to police and a hospital officials.

In the capital's southeast, a police car vehicle struck a roadside bomb, wounding seven, including three policemen, police and hospital officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information.

Putin sends New Year's greetings, with a wink (AP)

MOSCOW ? Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has sent New Year's greetings to all Russians, though with some sarcasm toward those protesting his 12 years in power and his plans to return to the presidency for at least six more years.

Putin on Saturday wished well-being and prosperity "to all our citizens regardless of their political persuasion, including those who sympathize with leftist forces and those situated on the right, below, above, however you like." In Russian, the sexual innuendo was clear.

Putin often uses crude language, especially when speaking derisively of his critics. His tough talk and the street slang that peppers his speeches have helped build his image as a man of the people.

His sarcasm toward the protesters backfired recently when he said the white ribbons they wear as an emblem looked like condoms. The protesters took their revenge at the next mass demonstration, where they held up a poster of Putin with his head wrapped in a scarf-like condom and another showing Putin and a condom with the words: "Attention! Not for re-use."

Putin, who was first elected president in 2000 and remained in charge after moving into the prime minister's seat in 2008, intends to reclaim the presidency in a March election.

Many Russians, especially young professionals in Moscow and other cities, have grown weary of Putin, who has squeezed out all political competition in centralizing his control and has allowed corruption to flourish.

Blatant vote manipulation in a Dec. 4 parliamentary election that helped Putin's party hang onto its majority caused widespread outrage and set off a wave of protests. Two demonstrations in December drew tens of thousands in the largest show of discontent since the Soviet Union fell in 1991. A third demonstration has been set for Feb. 4.

An anti-Putin protest on Saturday led by more radical opposition groups was broken up by police, who detained 60 people, some as they were approaching the site of the protest in central Moscow.

Putin's return to the Kremlin still seems certain, but he is under pressure to show he can win an election that is free and fair.

Putin portrays himself as the guarantor of Russia's stability, a theme he hit again in Saturday's address. He warned of the threat posed by the global economic crisis and noted that under his leadership Russia remains an "islet of stability."

President Dmitry Medvedev later gave the formal New Year's address and was more conciliatory toward the Kremlin's opponents.

"Yes, we are all different, but this is precisely where our strength lies, as well as in our ability to listen to, understand and respect one another, to overcome any difficulties and achieve success," he said in a prerecorded address broadcast at midnight across Russia's nine time zones.

Throughout his presidency, Medvedev has been the more liberal voice within Russia's leadership, but he has remained subordinate to Putin.

Putin has so far shown little interest in talking to the protesters, something he is now being urged to do by his former finance minister, Alexei Kudrin, who has offered to serve as an intermediary. Kudrin, who is close to Putin, said on Twitter that he met Saturday with two of the protest leaders.

Medvedev noted that 20 years ago, less than a week after the Soviet Union's collapse, Russians were proud to celebrate the New Year in a country called Russia.

"Our duty is to preserve it and build a progressive state, where all of us can live comfortably and do stimulating work," he said.
