CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian police fired tear gas Thursday at thousands of demonstrators outside the Interior Ministry protesting the security forces' failure to prevent a soccer riot that killed more than 70 people.

Anger has been building as the public and lawmakers blamed the country's military rulers for the bloodshed, the latest to signal rapidly deteriorating security in the country since Hosni Mubarak's fall nearly a year ago.

The protests started as a peaceful march by Egyptians angry over the police inaction from the headquarters of Al-Ahly, one of Egypt's most popular soccer clubs, to the area outside the ministry building near Tahrir Square, the epicenter of last year's popular uprising that ousted Mubarak.

Security forces guarding the area were separated from the more than 10,000 protesters by concrete blocs and barbed wire, but tensions rose as protesters advanced toward them, cursing and removing some of the barriers. They also raised their shoes in the air and hurled stones. Police responded with heavy tear gas, sending demonstrators running, with some passing out and falling to the ground.

Some tried to move big concrete blocs erected around the ministry since November, when clashes between the police and protesters then left more than 40 people dead.

In scenes reminiscent of those clashes, protesters set tires on fire, sending black smoke in the air. Motorcycle drivers ferried some of those wounded from the site as ambulances were unable to get through. Egyptian state TV said 100 people had passed out from the tear gas.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement the protesters had cut the barbed wire, and crossed over the concrete blocs to reach the roads leading to the headquarters. It urged the protesters "to listen to the sound of wisdom ... at these critical moments" to prevent the spread of chaos.

Wednesday's riot at the stadium in Port Said erupted when Al-Masry fans stormed the field following a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, one of Egypt's most popular clubs, but the violence went beyond the deep sports rivalry between the teams.

A network of rabid soccer fans known as Ultras vowed vengeance, accusing the police of intentionally letting rivals attack them because they have been at the forefront of protests over the past year, first against Mubarak and now the military.

Many members of die-hard soccer fans who were among the protesters vowed to storm the ministry.

"Either they (police) will die or we will die," said Islam, a member of the Ultras, said. "We are willing to die for the blood of martyrs."

He declined to give his last name because of the volatility of the situation.

Uzbek refugee denies helping terror group (AP)

DENVER ? A refugee from Uzbekistan accused of helping a foreign terrorist organization denied the allegations in a court appearance Thursday in Denver, before a judge advised him not to speak further without an attorney.

"I swear to Allah I never did anything like that," Jamshid Muhtorov said in Russian, according to a court translator.

Muhtorov, who lives in the Denver suburb of Aurora, said he had been held like a terrorist since his arrest at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Jan. 21.

He was transferred Wednesday to Colorado, where a federal charge was filed accusing him of providing material support and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic Jihad Union. The State Department has designated the group as a foreign terrorist organization.

Two days after his arrest, Muhtorov, 35, made a court appearance in Chicago with a court-appointed attorney, Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Holloway said.

Muhtorov, with closely cut hair, the beginnings of a beard and wearing a white, short-sleeved shirt, was without representation Thursday at his initial federal court appearance in Denver.

When U.S. Magistrate Judge Kathleen Tafoya asked if he wanted to hire an attorney, Muhtorov said he hadn't been allowed to talk to his wife or make arrangements to hire anyone since his arrest.

He said if he continued to be treated like that, he'd never have a chance to get an attorney. He said he felt like he'd been treated that way on purpose. He then denied the allegations before Tafoya told him not to say anything more because prosecutors could use anything he said against him.

Tafoya told Muhtorov she would appoint an attorney to defend him. "Thank you very much," he responded in English.

He is being held without bond until an arraignment and detention hearing Tuesday.

Muhtorov requested that he be held in a general cell, with other people, not like a suspected terrorist, but Tafoya said she had no control of where U.S. marshals hold him.

UK film outlawed for blasphemy finally unbanned

LONDON (AP) ? The only movie ever banned in Britain for blasphemy was finally approved for distribution Tuesday, 23 years after it was outlawed.

The experimental short film "Visions of Ecstasy" features scenes of Jesus being seduced on the cross and became a free-speech cause celebre after Britain's film censors refused to give it a rating, a requirement for legal distribution.

The British Board of Film Classification ruled in 1989 that a fantasy scene in which the Spanish mystic St. Teresa of Avila sexually caresses Christ's body could constitute blasphemous libel. The board judged that cutting out the potentially blasphemous material would shorten the 19-minute film by half, so they refused to approve it.

The movie, directed by Nigel Wingrove, became a rallying point for anti-censorship activists, and Wingrove fought the ban all the way to the European Court of Human Rights, which upheld the British decision in 1996.

Wingrove ? dubbed "Britain's answer to Hustler publisher Larry Flynt" by London's Evening Standard newspaper ? went on to found film distribution companies specializing in erotic gothic horror. He also has created artwork for the band Cradle of Filth and manages a burlesque group.

Blasphemy was abolished as an offense in 2008 and on Tuesday the film board gave Wingrove's film an "18" rating, meaning it may be viewed by adults.

The board acknowledged the film would be "deeply offensive to some viewers," but was unlikely to cause harm.

"In the absence of any breach of U.K. law and the lack of any credible risk of harm, as opposed to mere offensiveness, the board has no sustainable grounds on which to refuse a classification to 'Visions Of Ecstasy' in 2012," it said in a statement.

Wingrove welcomed the decision and said the ban had been a setback to his career.

"It was my second self-financing film and had it not been banned I would have continued to make films, but that all got knocked sideways and had a huge impact on my career," he said.

"I don't believe it should have been banned in the first place. No one in the church thought it was blasphemous. Some believed it could be viewed as offensive but that it fell well short of blasphemy," he added.
