Chinese cities order a fleet of the world?s largest buses (Yahoo! News)

China is a country more often associated with?high population and?traffic congestion than with mass transit. The cities of?Beijing and Hangzhou are making an effort to change that by putting a fleet of?new buses into service that break records as the world's largest.

The superbuses are approximately 82 feet long ? about six times longer than the average car, and 18 feet longer than the maximum legal length for a vehicle in the United States. Because of their length, the buses are divided into three sections by a pair of accordion joints to aid with navigation and turning.

According to its manufacturer,?Youngman JNP6250G buses have between 40 and 59 seats, but it's expected these buses will be able to hold up to 300 people. They offer easy wheelchair access and five different entrance and exit points.

Giant?bi-articulated buses are not new to China, but by increasing the number in service, the country hopes to reduce congestion and boost its?green credentials.?To help encourage ridership, these buses will be given their own lane on certain roadways, allowing them to bypass much of the notoriously gridlocked Chinese traffic.
