Former Doral detective says he was fired for backing mayor?s rival

Doral and its mayor, Juan Carlos Bermudez, are facing a federal civil rights lawsuit from a former police detective who claims he was fired for supporting a rival politician.

Anthony Rodriguez filed the suit last week seeking damages after he was ousted in January 2009 from the fledgling police department.

Rodriguez alleges that he was fired because he vocally supported Doral Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz, Bermudez?s political enemy.

The lawsuit cites a recent Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigative report that said ?testimony and evidence? revealed that Doral?s police chief, Ricardo Gomez, ordered an internal affairs sergeant to ?alter his investigative findings? into allegations against Rodriguez, to sustain them.

Rodriguez had been accused of improperly using his take-home car, and improperly delaying a Miami-Dade police probe into a domestic violence case. He denied both accusations.

Gomez told The Miami Herald last month that FDLE misconstrued how Doral internal affairs investigations are conducted. Doral?s city manager, in a letter to FDLE, criticized the investigation ? which resulted in no criminal charges ? as a ?political lynching.?
