Men taking long-acting chronic pain meds five times more likely to have low testosterone levels

Jan. 31, 2013 ? Low testosterone levels occur five times more often among men who take long-acting instead of short-acting opioids for chronic pain, according to a new Kaiser Permanente study published in The Clinical Journal of Pain.

While it has been known that opioids cause low testosterone in men, this study is the first to show a significant difference in risk between short-acting (immediate release) and long-acting opioids.

The 81 men in the retrospective study were between 26 and 79 years old (median age 51) and were seen in the chronic-pain clinic at Kaiser Permanente's Santa Rosa Medical Center (Calif.) between January 2009 and June 2010. All of the participants had been on a stable dose of an opioid for at least three months, and none had a previous diagnosis of low testosterone. A larger retrospective study of more than 1,500 male pain patients is currently under way.

"There's a large gap in the evidence base with regard to opioids," said Andrea Rubinstein, MD, of the Departments of Chronic Pain and Anesthesiology, Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa Medical Center. "More safety and efficacy studies are needed. We need to know how we can prescribe these very useful medications in a way that brings the greatest benefits to our patients, without introducing additional risks."

Once prescribed primarily to cancer patients, the use of opioid-based medications such as oxycodone (Oxycontin) and hydrocodone (Vicodin) for treating chronic, non-cancer pain has increased dramatically in recent decades. An estimated 4.3 million Americans use opioids on a daily basis for pain.

"For years, doctors have been encouraged to prescribe long-acting opioids rather than short-acting opioids because we believed they were safer, had less abuse potential, and offered more consistent pain control, but no study has ever been able to support this practice," Dr. Rubinstein said.

The study compared the use of short-acting opioids, which immediately release the pain medication and are taken every four to six hours, and long-acting opioids, which slowly release the pain medication and are taken every eight to 12 hours.

A healthy young man should have testosterone levels between 300 and 800 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL); in this study, low testosterone, also known as hypogonadism, was defined as less than 250 ng/dL. Low testosterone levels have been associated with decreases in muscle mass, bone density (osteoporosis or osteopenia), cognition, mood, libido (sex drive) and general quality of life.

Seventy-four percent of the men on long-acting opioids had low testosterone levels, compared with 34 percent of the men using short-acting opioids. After controlling for daily dosage and body mass index, the study found that the odds of having low testosterone were 4.78 times greater for men taking a long-acting opioid than a short-acting opioid. Dose was not associated with an increased risk of low testosterone.

"These medications work well for short-term, acute pain," said Dr. Rubinstein. "It has long been extrapolated that they can also be used safely long-term to control chronic pain. We are now finding that the long-term use of opioids may have important unintended health consequences."

Co-authors of the study were Diane M. Carpenter, MPH, Kaiser Permanente Division of Research; and Jerome R. Minkoff, MD, Kaiser Permanente Department of Endocrinology, Santa Rosa Medical Center.

Helaine Olen On Personal Finance Gurus - Business Insider

"What they're doing is they're denying the pressures that are on us. Our salaries have stagnated and fallen for well over a decade now. And what they're doing is saying, you're going to be fine if you're living within your means while they ignore the fact that our heath care costs have gone up at rates beyond inflation, housing has gone up at rates beyond inflation, education has gone up at rates beyond inflation."?

On why finance gurus have so much pull with consumers:?

"We're nuts when it comes to money and all we want is someone to tell us what to do. Most of us don't want to engage with our money even though we need it, and so the idea is, hey, I'll just follow this person and they'll tell me what to do. We also, in this country, have a huge attraction to this sort of tough thinking about money ?? where anybody can make it and it's your fault if you don't."?

City News ? Mario Singh: Truths About Trading

Forex coach Mario Singh teaches both the amateur and corporate investor to take advantage of opportunities in the forex market with his new book, 17 Proven Currency Trading Strategies ? How To Profit In The Forex Market.

By Yong Yung Shin

?If your plan of wealth creation is to leave money in the bank, you will be having an annual nett return of negative 3.5 percent,? says Mario Singh of the harsh reality of saving. ?Hence, learning to trade or invest in the financial markets is of great importance.?

In his new book, 17 Proven Currency Trading Strategies ? How To Profit In The Forex Market, the founder and chief forex coach at FX1 Academy teaches readers to navigate the profitable yet volatile world of Forex trading by sharing tips on addressing real-world trading scenarios and? identifying strategies that fit their personal styles and risk tolerance, among others.

The book, which took Singh one year to write, has received the endorsements of prolific global financial experts including Mark Mobius, the executive chairman of the Templeton Emerging Markets Group which manages assets worth USD$60 billion, and Kathy Lien, the managing director of BK Asset Management.

A regular guest on CNBC, Mario Singh shares with City News both the importance of learning to trade responsibly as well as its pitfalls. Plus, the most expensive lesson he ever learned.

What inspired you to write the book and why now?

The world is roughly split into three main regions: USA, Europe and Asia. All three regions are experiencing their own growth problems. The USA has just resolved its ?fiscal cliff? issues, but unemployment and low GDP figures still persist. The Eurozone entered into a recession late last year, with large economies like Spain needing financial help. Greece might also be the first country to exit the Euro.

China and Japan are considered Asia?s largest and second largest economies respectively; China?s GDP was below eight percent for much of 2012, its lowest in almost three years. Japan is still stuck in deflation, which is the main reason why the new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing for bigger government spending and monetary easing.

This is the main reason why I wrote the book now?to give both retail traders/investors and financial professionals a ?road-map? to guide them through this global economic turmoil.

In your years of trading experience, what was one of the most ?expensive? lessons you learned?

That?s got to be the first time I started trading with real money. I funded my account with S$3,000 and rubbed my hands with glee, fully focused on making a million bucks by the following week. The charts were moving upwards and I reasoned that gravity would soon pull it back down. I decided to click ?sell,? but to my horror, the prices kept moving up. I clicked ?sell? again but prices still continued climbing! In my state of panic, I clicked ?sell? a third time and even turned the laptop upside down in sheer desperation.

As it turned out, I lost the entire account in six days. That was the most expensive lesson I learned that day?never trade against the trend.

How important is personal finance management in the life of a trader, be it on a part or full-time basis?

It is of paramount importance. In fact, it is more important than the strategy itself. In trading, this is called ?money management? or ?risk management.?

Let?s say you start trading with $3,000. When you ?blow up? 50 percent of the account, the amount is down to $1,500. Now, to bring the account back up to the initial capital of $3,000, you have to make a 100 percent return. When you lose 80 percent of the account, you need to make a whopping 400 percent return just to bring it back up to the initial amount.

This is the principle in risk management?it?s very easy to lose money; but it?s very difficult to make it back.

So, rather than find yourself in that uncomfortable position, the answer is to trade with minimal risk. Specifically, I do not risk more than three percent of my capital for each trade. This means that if I started my account with $3,000 and the trade didn?t go the way I intended, I would exit the trade when my loss hits $90.

What are some of the no-no?s in forex trading?

I?ll share three.

Firstly, don?t trade with capital that you can?t afford to lose. I?ve seen people throw in their last bit of savings into a trading account in the hope of turning things around. Don?t do that. You will be so caught up in your emotions that you won?t be able to trade sensibly.

Secondly, never trade without a stop loss. A stop loss is defined as the level you would exit the trade if it doesn?t go in your intended direction. When traders don?t put a stop loss, they leave the account susceptible to a total wipeout when the markets trend in the opposite direction. Ironically, the group of traders who are adamant in not setting strict stop loss levels are the same group who walk away from the Forex market saying it?s risky.

Finally, don?t be in a hurry to trade with real money. Almost all Forex brokers worldwide provide free practice accounts for you to start your journey. Make use of them. Open a free practice account, get used to the trading platform and familiarize yourself with the charts and buttons.

Psychologically speaking, how do you manage the non-technical aspects of yourself when you trade?the gut instincts and emotions?

In world-class trading, money management is twice as important as strategy, but one?s ?state of mind? or ?emotions? is twice as important as money management. You can have the best strategy or the strictest money management rules, but if you allow greed, hope and fear to grip you when you are trading, it will derail you from your trading plan.

In the book, there is an entire chapter that helps readers discover their dominant trading profile; some traders like to trade 20 times a day, others prefer to trade once a month. Once you discover your dominant trading profile, you will then be able to choose the strategy that best complements your personality, leading to more consistently profitable trades.

A lot of people have the impression that trading, whether Forex or stocks or something else, is for those who are out to make a quick buck. Is that accurate?

Couldn?t be further from the truth. In Singapore, our inflation rate is about 4 percent while one year?s deposit in the bank earns about 0.5 percent interest. This tells us plainly that if your plan of wealth creation is to leave money in the bank, you would be having an annual nett return of negative 3.5 percent. Hence, learning to trade or invest in the financial markets is of great importance.

The reason why many people equate trading and investing to making a quick buck is because most of us have a reference to someone (or heard of someone) who has made decent money in the financial markets. If at all, such examples should serve to encourage us that we can do the same.

What kind of reader is your book most suited for?

My book is suited to three groups of people.

Firstly, it serves the working individual who?s holding down a job, but with intentions to make an additional stream of income in their spare time. You can do this in the 24-hour Forex market with only a laptop and an internet connection.

Secondly, it?s for finance professionals who deal with global assets like stocks, commodities, bonds and bullion. In the book, I talk about ?finance decoded? and ?market sentiment? and its subsequent impact on capital flows. This understanding can help you better structure your portfolio of global assets.

Finally, it?s for companies which deal with revenues and payments in different currencies worldwide. Currency fluctuations can hurt your bottom line significantly if you do not know how to hedge your exposed positions.

On Facebook, he describes himself as a "wounded warrior...very wounded."

Brendan Marrocco was the first soldier to survive losing all four limbs in the Iraq War, and doctors revealed Monday that he's received a double-arm transplant.

Those new arms "already move a little," he tweeted a month after the operation.

Marrocco, a 26-year-old New Yorker, was injured by a roadside bomb in 2009. He had the transplant Dec. 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, his father said Monday.

Alex Marrocco said his son does not want to talk with reporters until a news conference Tuesday at the hospital, but the younger Marrocco has repeatedly mentioned the transplant on Twitter and posted photos.

"Ohh yeah today has been one month since my surgery and they already move a little," Brendan Marrocco tweeted Jan. 18.

Responding to a tweet from NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski, he wrote: "dude I can't tell you how exciting this is for me. I feel like I finally get to start over."

The infantryman also received bone marrow from the same dead donor who supplied his new arms. That novel approach is aimed at helping his body accept the new limbs with minimal medication to prevent rejection.

The military sponsors operations like these to help wounded troops. About 300 have lost arms or hands in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Unlike a life-saving heart or liver transplant, limb transplants are aimed at improving quality of life, not extending it. Quality of life is a key concern for people missing arms and hands ? prosthetics for those limbs are not as advanced as those for feet and legs.

"He was the first quad amputee to survive," and there have been four others since then, Alex Marrocco said.

The Marroccos want to thank the donor's family for "making a selfless decision ... making a difference in Brendan's life," the father said.

Brendan Marrocco has been in public many times. During a July 4 visit last year to the Sept. 11 Memorial with other disabled soldiers, he said he had no regrets about his military service.

"I wouldn't change it in any way. ... I feel great. I'm still the same person," he said.

The 13-hour operation was led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Johns Hopkins. It was the seventh double-hand or double-arm transplant done in the United States.

Lee led three of those earlier operations when he worked at the University of Pittsburgh, including the only above-elbow transplant that had been done at the time, in 2010.

Marrocco's "was the most complicated one" so far, Lee said in an interview Monday. It will take more than a year to know how fully Marrocco will be able to use the new arms.

"The maximum speed is an inch a month for nerve regeneration," he explained. "We're easily looking at a couple years" until the full extent of recovery is known.

While at Pittsburgh, Lee pioneered the immune-suppression approach used for Marrocco. The surgeon led hand-transplant operations on five patients, giving them marrow from their donors in addition to the new limbs. All five recipients have done well, and four have been able to take just one anti-rejection drug instead of combination treatments most transplant patients receive.

Minimizing anti-rejection drugs is important because they have side effects and raise the risk of cancer over the long term. Those risks have limited the willingness of surgeons and patients to do more hand, arm and even face transplants.

Lee has received funding for his work from AFIRM, the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, a cooperative research network of top hospitals and universities around the country that the government formed about five years ago. With government money, he and several other plastic surgeons around the country are preparing to do more face transplants, possibly using the new immune-suppression approach.

Marrocco expects to spend three to four months at Hopkins, then return to a military hospital to continue physical therapy, his father said. Before the operation, he had been fitted with prosthetic legs and had learned to walk on his own.

He had been living with his older brother in a specially equipped home on New York's Staten Island that had been built with the help of several charities. Shortly after moving in, he said it was "a relief to not have to rely on other people so much."

The home was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Despite being in a lot of pain for some time after the operation, Marrocco showed a sense of humor, his father said. He had a hoarse voice from the tube that was in his throat during the long surgery and decided he sounded like Al Pacino. He soon started doing movie lines.

"He was making the nurses laugh," Alex Marrocco said.

Fighting in South Sudan town kills four, thousands flee

JUBA (Reuters) - A gunfight between South Sudanese soldiers and a former rebel commander's guards killed four people in a small eastern town, destroyed buildings there and forced thousands to flee, witnesses and officials said on Monday.

Symptomatic of the disorder that has plagued some parts of the south since it split from Sudan after decades of civil war, the fighting on Sunday in Jonglei state's Pibor broke out between soldiers on patrol and bodyguards of James Kuberin.

Such outbreaks are stymying efforts to exploit oil reserves in the new nation and subverting government efforts to build up state institutions and assert control over an impoverished country the size of France that is awash with weapons.

One soldier, two civilians and a former rebel were killed in the gunfight and Kuberin fled with his guards, army spokesman Philip Aguer said. He declined to say whether the army had fired on unarmed civilians.

Kuberin was commander of a group led by David Yau Yau, one of several militias fighting the army because of alleged abuses during a disarmament program and corruption in the Juba government. Kuberin defected to the army in December.

Witnesses said Kuberin went to Pibor's market for a haircut and was told by an army patrol not to walk around with armed guards.

Witness Peter Gazulu said one soldier had a hand grenade.

"Somebody tried to take it and they wrestled with it and it exploded. The guy died. Then the other men opened fire on the bodyguards and they escaped," he told Reuters by telephone.

"The army fired all over the place and burned half of Pibor town, particularly in the south. They were firing at civilians," he said. "In a house the father of my friend was burned alive. The body is still there." Several people were hurt, he said.

About two thousand people fled to a U.N. peacekeeping base, U.N. spokesman Kouider Zerrouk said.

Medical group Medecins Sans Frontieres, one of few charities operating in Jonglei, said it had treated four people for gunshot wounds.

South Sudan's civil war with Sudan ended with a 2005 peace deal which paved the way for secession. Rebel and inter-ethnic violence is hindering government plans to explore a vast oil concession block with the help of French firm Total.

In Jonglei, there has been a cycle of revenge killings between the Murle and Lou Nuer tribes, often provoked by cattle raids. More than 1,500 people have been killed in the clashes since South Sudan's independence, the United Nations says.

Human rights groups accuse the army of serious abuses against civilians, including simulated drownings and rape, during a disarmament process aimed at ending the violence.

South Sudan accuses Sudan of supplying Yau Yau's rebels with weapons, an allegation denied by Khartoum.

Bahrain opposition gives cautious nod for talks

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Bahrain's main opposition groups say they are willing to open dialogue aimed at easing the Gulf nation's two-year political crisis, but they seek more clarity on the scope of the possible talks.

Washington and other allies of Bahrain's monarchy have encouraged negotiations in the strategic kingdom, home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Persistent clashes and arrests have so far derailed bids for talks between Bahrain's Sunni leadership and the Shiite opposition, which began an Arab Spring-inspired uprising for a greater political voice in February 2011. More than 55 people have died in the unrest.

A statement Monday by the main Shiite political factions said envoys were open to negotiations but called the government's offers for talks "vague."

Opposition demands include the release of jailed Shiite political leaders and activists.

First look: The Carbon for Android Twitter app

Carbon for Android

After many months and a few false starts, the long-awaited client prepares for initial release

It's tough to talk about the Carbon for Android Twitter client without saying a few things up front:

  1. No, it's still not available. But that we've been given a pre-release version to share should tell you something.
  2. Yes, we're all very much aware that we've been talking about Carbon, off and on, for more than a year now. (A whopping six stories out of some 6,000 written over 13 months, if our math is right.) Announcements of imminent release have come and gone, followed by long periods of silence. You can either choose to get over that, read this preview and give this app a shot when it's released in the near future, or not.
  3. There are now two Carbon apps for Android. This one, obviously, is the Twitter app, from the developer dots & lines, which first brought Carbon to webOS, where it garnered much praise. It later came to Windows Phone before being put out to pasture, much to the chagrin of this Microsoft faithful. The other Carbon app is a backup and sync client from Koushik Dutta. We're not sure which app will see first public release (our money's on the backup app), but having two apps with the same name is about as fun for us as it is for you, we reckon.
  4. Carbon (the Twitter app) may well be the best-designed Twitter app we've used yet -- and there are some good ones out there.

So with those things in mind, join us for our first look at the long-awaited Carbon Twitter app.

XM MLB Chat: Internet TV viewing cutting into broadcast and cable ...

1/26/13, "Watching TV on web is disrupting cable, broadcast worlds," Miami Herald, Glenn Garvin

"When Barnett and 5,000 or so others gather Monday for the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) convention at the Fontainebleau Hotel on Miami Beach, there will be plenty of sweaty foreheads, some acquisitive smiles and ? perhaps most numerous ? blank looks of confusion. Not since cable turned the old three-channel TV universe on its head in the late 1970s has the industry been in such a state of disoriented befuddlement.

New technologies that give viewers more say in what they watch, where they watch and how much they pay for it are great for consumers. But they?re inducing a collective nervous breakdown among industry executives, who have to figure out new ways to make money in a business facing serious threats to its traditional sources of revenue ? advertising and cable-TV subscriptions....

The industry last year was blindsided by everything from a leap in the use of TiVo and other digital video-recording devices that pushed Nielsen ratings down as much as 50 percent to a new device called the Hopper that allows viewers to instantly zap by commercials.

But the biggest tremors came from the Internet, which is threatening to remake television as thoroughly as it already has the newspaper and music industries, by letting viewers bypass cable to watch shows online.

There was explosive growth in what the industry calls over-the-top or OTT, little boxes that sell for as little as $50 or so and allow viewers access to hundreds of streaming-video Internet television channels from their TVs. Apple and Roku, who make the most popular OTT players, have sold about five million apiece. But other companies like Amazon, Google and Western Electric are pushing into the market, and industry analysts say Intel, the world?s largest semi-conductor chip manufacturer, is also poised to leap into the OTT business.

Another major OTT force: video-game consoles like Xbox and PlayStation, which can also be used to watch streaming Internet video. ?They may be doing more business than anybody,? says Andy Tarzon, founding partner of the media research company TDG. ?Xbox is the leading viewer for Netflix content.? It will, soon enough, have its own content; parent company Microsoft late last year hired senior CBS programming executive Nancy Tellem, who helped develop Friends and ER, to direct an on-line TV operation.

??The use of programming services that deliver television program via the Internet is mushrooming, with Netflix, YouTube, Amazon and other big names ? even Walmart ? setting up or expanding operations. ?More than anything, that?s gotten everybody?s attention,? says Terence Gray, a longtime network producer who now runs the New York Television Festival. ?When you see YouTube?s $100 million investment in programming, or what Amazon?s studios did last year, or Microsoft hiring Nancy Tellem, this is no longer a conversation. This is being done.?

Hulu, a website that offers shows from NBC, ABC and Fox, doubled its subscribers last year while increasing its revenue 65 percent. Meanwhile, many of the online services are starting to make their own shows: Hulu debuted 10 of its own programs last year and Netflix has five in production, including House of Cards, a political thriller starring Kevin Spacey that debuts next week.

Attacking cable from a different direction, Aero TV uses tiny but powerful antennas to capture broadcast signals from the air, records them, then reroutes them into a viewer?s computer or OTT player to be watched whenever he wants. Because Aero pays nothing to the broadcasters (a practice being challenged in court) it can offer its service for as little as $8 a month. Last year?s start-up in New York City was so successful that Aero is expanding to 22 more cities ? including Miami ? this year.

Senior television executives caution against any expectation that their industry is about to embark on an instant makeover, and the numbers bear them out. Hulu?s three million subscribers are about one-seventh the number of viewers who watch NCIS each week on CBS, and its $700 million in annual revenues is tip money compared the $3.4 billion CBS generated in a single fiscal quarter last year. ?This is going to be an evolution, not a revolution,? says Bruce David Klein, president of the independent production company Atlas Media.

But the technological advances in Internet television come at a time when customer grumbling over escalating cable prices has grown to a roar and a younger generation of viewers more comfortable with computers than TVs is starting to set up its own households. The new alignment of attitudes is already taking a toll.

Subscriptions to cable and satellite television peaked in 2010 and have fallen five percentage points since then, the research company TDG reported late last year. Meanwhile, consumer satisfaction with cable service, which had held steady for years between 65 and 70 percent, dropped 10 percentage points.

?The most interesting part of that report, to me, was that it said a lot of the people without cable are not ?cord-cutters? but cord-never-havers,? says Jim Flynn, president of Massachusetts-based Overlook TV. ?We employ some of those people at my company. They?re in their early 20s, just out of college, and for them, paying $100 or $200 a month for cable TV is just not an option. And they don?t feel bad about it. They?re part of this millennial generation who are perfectly happy getting all their video over the Internet.?:...via Free Republic

North York Neck Pain Alleviated Naturally With Acupuncture Needles

North York acupuncture therapy could be a way of helping a body to rebalance itself. The process involves the manipulation of thin needles that are inserted into specific points in the body. These points correspond to acupuncture points identified through traditional Chinese medicine.

The reason for these specific locations is to help remedy any imbalances in the body. By using these super fine needles the acupuncturist is able to facilitate the way the energy flows through the body. This belief hinges on the the thought that energy can somehow be prevented from flowing freely around the body.

This truly is an ancient process, and its exact development isn?t really known. One explanation is that soldiers in being wounded by sharp pointed instruments in battle, and who went on to recover, found various ailments were better than before. It?s thought the original needles could?ve consisted of bone and stone, before being replaced with metal needles.

There really is not a lot of evidence as to how this method may work. There is probably even less known about why it may work, but some people do find it helpful. The exact points for the needles insertion are decided by the acupuncturist. They carefully question the person beforehand, and may also just observe while others will use a more hands on approach to feel for tender or sore spots.

They are quite likely to take a person?s pulse, and also to look at the tongue. It is something that is frequently based on intuition, philosophy and experience. The needles used tend to be made out of stainless steel and are extremely thin. Most are disposable, although some are reused after being thoroughly sterilized.

Shorter needles are used around the face and neck. Longer needles can be used in other ares. They are so skillfully inserted by North York acupuncture pros that most people will not be aware they are going in.

Acupuncture relieves neck and back pain naturally. You can get more information about a North York acupuncture professional at http://www.bayviewwellness.ca/ now.

How to Share Vine Videos on Tumblr

When Twitter launched Vine Thursday it omitted one important social network from its sharing options: Tumblr. Looped GIF images are extremely popular on Tumblr, so the audience there for Vine videos is potentially huge.

Just because there?s no native way to share Vines on Tumblr, doesn?t mean you can?t share your creations on the site. Here are few different ways you can include Vine videos in your Tumblr posts:

[More from Mashable: Facebook Explains Why Vine Can?t Access Your Friends]

Upload Directly To Tumblr

If you want to share your Vine on Tumblr, one of the easiest ways is to just upload it directly to your Tumblr from your iOS device using Tumblr's app.

Every Vine you create is automatically saved to the camera roll on your device. To upload to Tumblr:

[More from Mashable: John Tesh Thanks 500 Helpful Tweeters With $5 Gift Cards]

  • Launch the Tumblr app on your phone
  • Create a new post
  • Select video from the options
  • Choose existing video
  • Select the Vine you?d like to upload from the video clips stored on your phone

Vine videos shared this way will just play through once rather than loop. To get that looped effect, you can import the video clip into your favorite mobile video editor (Splice is a good example, but there are many others) and copy it several times, laying the copies down on the timeline, one after another. Once you?ve reached your desired length, export the video and upload it just as you would a traditional video through Tumblr.

SEE ALSO: Brands Are Already Experimenting With Twitter's Vine

If you don?t have a video editor on your phone, you can email the clip to yourself from your phone?s Photo Library and edit it on your computer instead.

Embed a Tweet

Embedding a tweet on Tumblr is the easiest way to share the looped version of your Vine. To embed a tweet:

  • Share your Vine on Twitter
  • Go to Twitter.com
  • Click on the More button on the tweet associated with your Vine
  • Select Embed Tweet
  • Copy the code generated by Twitter and add it to a post on Tumblr

If you don?t want to share all your Vines through your own Twitter stream but want the ability to embed them, consider creating a Twitter account just for your Vines. Once you tweet them, you?ll be able to copy/paste tweets or links to your Vine from your special account to your main account fairly easily, and you won't pollute your traditional Twitter stream.

Upload To Your Favorite Video Service

iOS devices offer the ability to upload video clips directly from your Photo Library to YouTube.

Vine video files are saved as MOV?s so you can upload the file to almost any video service and then embed that player into your Tumblr blog.

The file can also be downloaded onto your computer and uploaded to Tumblr (or other sites) any way you?d like.

Have you tried sharing Vine videos on Tumblr, or another site? Let us know your own tips and tricks for sharing the video clips in the comments.

Stark warning over Shropshire's growing floods risk ? Shropshire Star

Homeowners in Shropshire should brace themselves for more flooding in the coming years, an expert has warned.

Mary Dhonau, chief executive of the Know Your Flood Risk campaign, said the county was likely to suffer further flooding misery on a regular basis in future after the region suffered a soaking in 2012.

About 40 people attended the flood information event at The Shirehall
About 40 people attended the flood information event at The Shirehall

?It was the wettest year on record in the Midlands ever,? she said.? ?Flooding is set to get worse ? it is the biggest natural threat this country faces.?

She made the comments before giving a presentation in Shrewsbury at Shropshire Council?s Flood Insurance and Information Workshop.

The expert, whose own home in Worcester has been flooded 12 times, said families should draw up a household emergency plan to prepare for the possibility of flooding, addressing issues such as what to do with pets and containing a list of important contact numbers.

She also suggested residents put together a bag containing items such as essential medication and spare clothing that can be easily grabbed if flooding forces families out of their homes unexpectedly.

?There is nobody who is not at risk of flooding,? she said.

About 40 people attended the event at Shirehall last night, which also featured presentations from representatives from Shropshire Council, the Environment Agency and the Association of British Insurers.

Among those attending? was Carly Rose from Ellesmere, who is doing a PhD at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

She added that she also believes flooding will be a growing problem for communities in Shropshire.

?All the research I have read on climate change means there is no doubt in my mind we are going to have to deal with more floods as the years go by,? she said.

?People think ?it isn?t going to happen to me?.?

She said it was important people take proactive steps to minimise the possible effects of flooding on their homes.

PBS profiles Martin Goetz, recipient of the first software patent

PBS has been exploring a fair bit technology history with its digital shorts lately -- examining the likes of animated GIFs, indie games and coding as art in its Off Book series -- and it's now tackled one issue that's making more headlines than ever: software patents. It hasn't provided a distilled history of the topic this time, though, instead offering a brief profile of the man who received the first software patent in 1968, Martin Goetz, as part of its Inventors series. Not surprisingly, he still sees a place for software patents, but admits that the current situation is "a little bit of a mess." Head on past the break for the video.

Florida squatter claims ownership of $2.5 million mansion

The $2.5 million Boca Raton mansion being inhabited by Andre "Loki" Barbosa (Google Street View)Thomas Jefferson once said, ?If you want something you?ve never had, you must be willing to do something you?ve never done.? But one Florida man says he?s the rightful owner of a $2.5 million mansion because he walked through the front door and never left.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that 23-year-old Andre ?Loki? Barbosa is a squatter trying to cash in on a Florida law which says an individual may claim ownership of a property if they have lived there for seven years.

Sunrise real estate lawyer Gary Singer told the paper Barbosa is arguing that a Florida law known as ?adverse possession? applies to him. The foreclosed, 7,522-square-foot property has reportedly been empty for about 18 months.

Barbosa reportedly filed his "adverse possession" paperwork in July 2012.

And the idea of a random stranger moving into the upscale Boca Raton neighborhood isn?t sitting well with the other, paying residents.

"This is a very upsetting thing," neighbor Lyn Houston told the Sentinel. "Last week, I went to the Bank of America and asked to see the person in charge of mortgages. I told them, 'I am prepared to buy this house.' They haven't even called me back."

According to reports, no one saw Barbosa enter the property, so police have been unable to forcibly remove him from the 5-bedroom home. For their part, Bank of America says they are following a legal process to reclaim the property, sending a request for an eviction notice to the local court.

"The bank is taking this situation seriously and we will work diligently to resolve this matter," BofA spokeswoman Jumana Bauwens told the paper.

A Facebook page listed under Barbosa?s name has been chronicling the situation, referring to the disputed property as ?Templo de Kamisamar.? A recent post claiming to be from Barbosa declares, ?A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.?

The Sentinel reports that Barbosa has also placed a notice on the front window of the property declaring himself the, "living beneficiary to the Divine Estate being superior of commerce and usury."

Nokia 808 PureView: officially the last Symbian phone

Nokia 808 PureView The last Symbian phone

So long, Symbian. Nestled away in the company's financial announcement this morning, Nokia confirmed that its pixel-punching 808 PureView phone will be the last release powered by the increasingly creaky Symbian OS. In no uncertain terms:

"The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia."

The company still managed to sell a total of 2.2 million Symbian devices during the last quarter, half the number of Windows Phone 8 devices shifted in the same period -- presumably thanks, in some way, to that as-yet unparalleled PureView camera sensor. We'll be pouring one out (and capturing it in 38 megapixels) if you need us.

HOUSTON, Jan. 24, 2013: Group 1 Automotive Enters Agreement ...

? /PRNewswire/ --?Group 1 Automotive, Inc.?(NYSE: GPI), a Fortune 500 automotive retailer, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase 100 percent of the outstanding shares of UAB Motors Participacoes S.A., one of Brazil's largest automotive retailers, for approximately $47.4 million cash, 1.45 million shares of Group 1 common stock and the assumption of approximately $62 million of net non-floorplan debt. Upon closing, Group 1 will assume ownership of 100 percent interest in 18 dealerships ? two Toyota, four Nissan, two BMW, two BMW/MINI, three Renault, three Peugeot, one Land Rover and one Land Rover/Jaguar. The dealerships, that include 21 franchises representing eight major brands in the Sao Paulo market and key metropolitan markets in the neighboring state of Parana, are expected to generate approximately $650 million in estimated annual revenues.

Group 1 expects the pending transaction to be modestly accretive, approximately $0.03 to $0.05, to earnings per diluted common share in 2013 excluding any associated deal costs. The acquisition is targeted to close on or about Feb. 28, 2013, and is subject to customary closing conditions, including approval from various manufacturers.

Group 1 anticipates that it will report pretax deal costs associated with this acquisition of approximately $1.5 million in its fourth-quarter 2012 results.

Based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, UAB's operations include 18 dealerships with 21 franchises, as well as five collision centers, located in the Sao Paulo metro market and the adjacent state of Parana. The franchises include current Group 1 brands Toyota, Nissan, BMW and MINI, and will add four new brands ? Renault, Peugeot, Land Rover and Jaguar ? to Group 1's portfolio. In Brazil, UAB is one of the largest sellers of Nissan and Peugeot vehicles and is a top five retailer of BMW, MINI and Land Rover vehicles. The business will continue to be operated by the current management team, with UAB's chairman, Lincoln da Cunha Pereira Filho, reporting directly to Earl J. Hesterberg, Group 1's president and chief executive officer. As part of the transaction, Group 1 will appoint Pereira to its board of directors, expanding its membership to eight.

Brazil is the fourth largest new vehicle market in the world, with annual sales of 3.8 million units in 2012. Brazil also has one of the lowest vehicle-to-population ratios among the developing markets, providing a strong foundation for future growth in the market.

"Group 1 is delighted by the opportunity of expanding into Brazil, a fast-growing automotive market, by adding these great brands and the successful UAB operating team to our company," said Earl J. Hesterberg, Group 1's president and chief executive officer. "To enter one of the largest auto markets in the world with a well-established retail infrastructure and management team provides Group 1 and our shareholders with an incredible growth opportunity. We are also excited to further expand our relationships with some of our key manufacturer partners to the Brazilian market. As this market continues to evolve, we are confident that we can add value in the area of used vehicles, parts, service and the overall application of technology and processes."

Al-Qaida's No. 2 in Yemen succumbs to wounds

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Al-Qaida's No. 2 in Yemen died of wounds sustained in a U.S. drone attack last year in southern Yemen, the country's official news agency and a security official said Thursday.

Saeed al-Shihri, a Saudi national who fought in Afghanistan and spent six years in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, was wounded in a missile attack in the southern city of Saada on Oct. 28, according to SABA news agency.

The agency said that had fallen into a coma since then. It was not clear when he actually died.

A security official said that the missile had been fired by a U.S. -operated, unmanned drone aircraft. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

Yemen had previously announced al-Shihri's death in a Sept. 10 drone attack in the province of Hadramawt. A subsequent DNA test however proved that the body recovered was not that of al-Shihri.

On Oct. 22, al-Shihri denied his own death in audio message posted on Jihadi websites.

Also known by the nom de guerre Abu Sufyan al-Azdi, he denounced at the time the Yemeni government for spreading the "rumor about my death ... as though the killing of the mujahideen (holy warriors) by America is a victory to Islam and Muslims."

Al-Shihri went through Saudi Arabia's famous "rehabilitation" institutes after he returned to his home country, but then he fled to Yemen and became deputy to Nasser al-Wahishi, the leader of an al-Qaida group.

Al-Shihri's death is considered a major blow to al-Qaida's Yemen branch, known as al-Qaida in The Arabian Peninsula. Washington considers it the most dangerous of the group's offshoots.

Al-Qaida in Yemen has been linked to several attempted attacks on U.S. targets, including the foiled Christmas Day 2009 bombing of an airliner over Detroit and explosives-laden parcels intercepted aboard cargo flights last year.

In 2011, a high-profile U.S. drone strike killed U.S.-born Anwar al-Awlaki, who had been linked to the planning and execution of several attacks targeting U.S. and Western interests, including the attempt to down a Detroit-bound airliner in 2009 and the plot to bomb cargo planes in 2010.

Yemen, the Arab world's poorest nation, has fallen into lawlessness during a yearlong uprising starting in 2011, when millions of Yemenis took to the streets demanding the ouster of their longtime authoritarian ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Al-Qaida militants exploited the unrest and took control of large swaths of land in the south until last spring, when the military, backed by the U.S., managed to drive hundreds of militants out of major cities and towns.

Since then, the group has carried out deadly attacks targeting mostly security and military officials, including suicide bombings that targeted military and security compounds.
